The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has come to a voluntary agreement with the medical device industry, hospitals and other healthcare organizations to implement a Unique Device Identification (UDI) system for medical devices. The use of this unambiguous identification system for medical devices will be phased in gradually.

Initially, from 1 July 2018, the code will need to be placed on implants that are listed in the National Implants Register. Then, from September 2018, the list of applicable devices will be expanded further.
